Start beside the actual bed.
Record the finished mattress height, available floor space and the position of switches or sockets. List the objects that need to be within reach and whether the piece must provide storage. Include the usual route around the bed.
A sculptural reference may look balanced in a large room but offer a very different usable surface beside your bed. Compare the proposed footprint and height in the actual space.
Look at edges and contact surfaces.
Discuss the visible profile, corners, underside and any interfaces with a base or drawer. Ask how the piece contacts the floor and whether the chosen arrangement needs protective or levelling components.
Where storage is integrated, review the opening, access and support arrangement. A photograph of a curved front does not define the hardware or construction behind it.
Plan everyday care and occasional movement.
Describe drinks, lamps, cosmetics or other objects used on the surface. Ask for the care instructions for the selected material and finish. Check whether cleaning around and below the piece is practical.
Confirm the weight, delivery route and safe handling arrangement with the supplier and delivery team. Agree whether the piece arrives as one assembly or in components, and who completes installation.
Your checklist
- 01
Mattress height and room footprint.
- 02
Switches, sockets and reach.
- 03
Objects and storage needs.
- 04
Edge, corners and supporting assembly.
- 05
Floor contact and cleaning access.
- 06
Delivery, handling and installation.
Keep the agreed information with the dated project drawing.
Questions before the next step
Should a bedside table match the bed height exactly?
Review reach and use with the actual mattress and room arrangement. Treat the height as a design decision rather than a universal rule.
Can a side table work beside a bed?
Yes, if its dimensions, usable surface, support and everyday access suit that specific position.
